The Montessori method (Italian: Metodo Montessori) is an educational approach for children, based on the research and experience of the Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori (1870–1952). The method was formulated on the basis of observations she made on children who were given a free learning environment, which led in 1907 to her conclusion that she had discovered the "true nature of the child." Based on its observations, Montessori has created a learning environment built from materials designed for independent learning activities. The Montessori method is designed to allow children to express their natural way of life.
